1. Brown the sausage in a Dutch oven with oil.
2. Add the carrots, garlic, onion and basil and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes.
3. Add the remaining ingredients except for the beans and bring the mixture to a boil.
4. Cover, lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour.
5. Add the Great Northern beans and cook for another 20 minutes.
6. Serve garnished with fresh chopped parsley.
