1. Brown the sausage in a large pot over low heat, for approximately 10 minutes.
2. Transfer the sausage to a cutting board and cut into slices.
3. Drain and discard the fat, reserving 1 tablespoon of fat.
4. Add the onion to the pot and cook for 5 minutes, or until translucent.
5. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, which takes about 1 minute.
6. Add the broth, water and salt and bring the mixture to a boil.
7. Add the sliced sausage, potatoes and red pepper flakes to the pot and bring the mixture back to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes.
8. Add the shredded kale and bring the pot back to a simmer.
9. Cook for another 6 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the kale has wilted.
10. Add the black pepper and stir well to combine.
11. Serve hot.
